English Version Below…
On the wall of my cubicle, there is a picture which I have taken last month. It is a picture of a raindrop on the body of a leaf.
And at the bottom of the picture, I added 2 Chinese words: 谦卑 (qian bei).
In Chinese, “卑”(bei) is a negative word which means “lowly”, “insignificant”, or “low in rank”. But when it is being placed together with the word “谦”, it’s meaning has changed to being mindful not to be arrogant but yet not to belittle ourselves.
I have used this picture to remind myself to be modest and humble, and just be myself, without being affected by the external environment.
I used to avoid top management leaders, fearing that they would talk to me and ask me questions that I couldn’t answer. Part of the reason was the fear of leaving a bad impression.
But as I see myself transforming, I try my best to see things and people in equality, for I have realised that I am not as bad / lousy as I thought, and my success or happiness lies upon myself, not the others.
I am just me.
Regardless whether it’s the higher management or colleagues who are lower rank than me, we are all equals;
Regardless whether it’s the political leaders or commoners along the street, they are all equals too;
And regardless the occupation that we hold, whether is it the CEO or a ordinary staff, the street performers or even the prostitutes, we are still equal.
I remembered reading this short story:
A prostitue was brought in front of Jesus. The people sought Jesus’ opinions as they claimed that the woman was full of sins for her role. They wanted to put the woman to death by throwing stones at her. Without lifting his head, Jesus said:”If anyone of you here feel that you have never committed any sin, you are free to throw the stone at her.” Nobody did anything.
As I look at every one that crosses my path now, I will imagine myself not being better than him/her. However, I will also imagine myself being not worst off. We each have our own strengths and weaknesses and I prefer to live the rest of life with modesty, and stick to my own principles.
I will just be myself, respect and be nice to myself. I will love myself and be a free man in this world…
